What Furniture to Choose If You Need More Storage Space

Unless you live in a mansion, storage in your home is likely to be an issue. A lack of space and limited areas to discreetly keep your possessions can all exasperate this problem. However, there are solutions to this problem. One of these is making the right choices when buying furniture. This will help to maximise the space available and create better storage solutions for your home. Here are a few tips on choosing the best furniture to solve your storage problems.

Multi-Functional Furniture and Built-In Storage

The best furniture to choose if storage is an issue are items that are multi-functional or have built-in storage. Furniture manufacturers are becoming increasingly aware of the storage needs of their customers. Consumers now have a lot of options in terms of furniture that serves several purposes. Opt for a bed with drawers included as this is the ideal solution for storing bedding. It can also be used for clothes if you have limited wardrobe space as well as any other items you need to keep out of sight. Similarly, choose dining and coffee tables that include drawers. In a dining table, they are the perfect space to store cutlery, tablecloths and other tableware. The space under coffee tables is commonly used to keep magazines, brochures or newspapers. Storing paperwork here is another option.

Vertical Furniture

Think upwards rather than outwards. Furniture that takes up a lot of floor space is a bad idea for two reasons. Firstly, it takes up valuable living space that could be better used. Secondly, it does not make the most of the space in the upper part of the room. Instead, try to buy pieces that make the most of the upper parts of your rooms, while not using much of the space below. Items like drawers, display cabinets and bookcases can often be found in designs that are tall, yet slimline. Similarly, consider furniture that can be stacked as this is another way of utilising the vertical space.

Space-Saving Furniture

If the problem in your home is that there is a lack of space due to the size of your furniture, then the obvious solution is to opt for furniture that takes up less space. Think about your own personal needs, such as how many people you need to seat in your living room, before deciding on which items to buy for your home – do you really need that extra chair in the corner? If they are taking up unnecessary space that could otherwise be put to better use for storing things, then look for alternatives. Choose pieces that take up as little floor space as possible, as this will also leave more space available for storing other items.

Avoid Useless Items

Everyone likes their home to look good and for it to be a reflection of their personality and taste. This is often represented by the choice of furniture. Decorative furniture is nice, but it can add to any storage problems you are having. Instead, only have furniture in your home that has a functional use. This does not mean it has to be boring and it can still be decorative – just make sure it is both decorative and practical. If it has no use, then replace it with something that is both visually appealing and also offers a storage solution.

Slimline and Corner Furniture

It is important to make the most of all the space available to you. There may be areas of your home that are too small to fit regular furniture into. This leads to some areas, such as alcoves, under the stairs and awkward corners, not being used at all. Look for slimline or corner furniture that can fit neatly into these spaces. Typical furniture available in slimline or corner designs are bookcases, shelving, display cabinets and chest of drawers.

Fitted Wardrobes

It may be worth paying the extra to have bespoke fitted wardrobes in your home. Buying individual pieces of furniture does not always offer the best solutions, in terms of space or storage. By choosing fitted wardrobes, you can fully utilise every inch of your bedroom and also think of the best storage solutions to meet your needs. The area at the bottom of the wardrobe is often not used to its full potential. Neither are the tops of wardrobes. Having fitted wardrobes designed to meet your needs allows you to ensure that the potential of these spaces is fully maximised.
