Flexistore was set up in April 2002 by Keith Grant and Martin Chalmers, who both came from a background of storage and distribution. Keith and Martin believe the structure of traditional self storage is too rigid and lacks customer service. Traditional self storage depends on the customer putting all the hard work into finding the solution to store their possessions, and the self storage company only needs to provide a lockable storage room. Some self storage companies realise the shortcoming of their product, and now offer delivery services by recommending a local removal or van rental company. Mobile self storage has the market power of convenience, because to use traditional self storage the customer requires logistics skills, time and effort, and a solution to all this is welcome. Mobile self storage offers several advantages to the customer.

Before setting up Flexistore, Keith and Martin were asked to move about 100 full archive boxes from a customer’s office to a self store site. This job turned out to be one of the incidents that created the Flexistore concept. When Keith and Martin arrived at the self store site they were told the storage room was on the first floor at the end of the corridor, and there wasn’t a lift at this particular site! Needless to say, the job was completed to the customer’s satisfaction. But, what if we could have reversed the van upto the storage room and unloaded, or even better, just loaded the boxes directly into the storage room at the customer’s office! If Flexistore was around then, loads of time and effort could have been saved.
