5 Clever Storage Solutions for a Student Pad

A student pad often has limited space and some rooms in the accommodation may be shared. This means that students need to get a little creative with storage solutions and think outside the box. If you’re struggling to find storage in your student pad then here are five clever solutions that might just save the day!

Over the Doors

Most students live in rented accommodation. If this is the case for you, your landlord may have put restrictions on you doing things like putting up shelves or hooks to store your personal possessions on. One solution to this is to use the doors instead. There are lots of different cheap products available to buy that will help you use the door as a storage area.

Over the door hooks are great for hanging coats, jackets, dressing gowns or goodies from. You can also hang bags containing some of your smaller possessions to avoid clutter building up. Similarly, another product you could choose is a plastic holder with pockets. There are several different items you can store in these including shoes, rolled up underwear, stationery or gadgets. Basically, anything that is small enough to fit in the plastic pockets can be stored there.

Under the Bed

The space under your bed is often a wasted space that could be better used as a storage area. This doesn’t mean kicking all your dirty laundry underneath – instead, use drawers to store clothes, books, bedding or any other items you are struggling to find a space for. Better still, opt for a bed that has built-in drawers underneath it if you get the choice. Either way, you can cover the things you have stored by adding a bed cover to your bed that drops to the floor. Similarly, there may be other areas of your house under which you can find storage space.

Self Storage Units

If you have larger items to store, such as a bicycle or some items of furniture, then it may not be possible to keep these items in your student den. Also, there may be no shed or garage available to you for items such as these. One option is to consider storing your stuff with a storage company on a short-term basis. These are a low-cost and secure solution. The only person who will have access to your possessions is you. This is the perfect answer for storing things that you don’t need on a daily basis. Unlike a shed or garage, anything you store in the unit will be dry and won’t be damaged by damp – or even worse, stolen.

Wardrobes

OK, so you’re probably thinking that the wardrobe is really obvious as a place to keep your clothes and wondering why we’re even including it on the list. However, it is the way that you use your wardrobe that counts. Most students can’t afford to spend a lot of money on extra furniture for storage, but it is likely that you will have a wardrobe. These usually have a single hanging rail and sometimes shelves down one side and perfect for the obvious use of hanging your clothes on the rail and keeping other clothes folded on the shelves.

It is the space at the bottom of the wardrobe and on the top that you can use as extra space. The bottom of the wardrobe will usually fit a whole cardboard box full of things under the clothes you have hung in there. An alternative use is keeping your shoes or more folded clothes there. The flat surface at the top of your wardrobe is ideal for use as a bookshelf or for storing another box of your stuff. If you are worried about it looking unsightly, then buy some decorative boxes to put your clothes in to keep them clean and tidy.

Use Fixtures and Fittings

If you cannot fit shelves and are short of space, you need to look for other flat surfaces that can perform the same function as shelves. Examples of these include a fireplace or the tops of kitchen units. As they are flat, strong and sturdy, you can use them to keep any number of items on. If you need the space for lots of books, then use them as bookcases. Looking for somewhere to display your photos or memorabilia? Use the fittings, however check with your landlord first as some won’t want you to put anything in the walls and you run the risk of damaging your deposit.
