‘Storage is boring’ – exploding the myth
As much as it pains us to admit it, we’re aware that sometimes you guys are of the opinion that storage facilities aren’t actually very exciting places. Somehow, you maybe don’t quite pick up on the James Bond-esque combination of sophistication, intrigue, and innovation that we know is infused throughout a good storage facility.
What’s that? You’re dubious? Then let us guide you through the world’s most exciting storage facilities…ever!
Area 51
We’re perhaps cheating slightly here by assuming that Area 51 actually is a storage facility. Given that the US government tends to be hazy on the true purpose of this heavily secured facility in southern Nevada, we’ve opted to go with the popular culture interpretation of things. To be fair, the US government are in something of a catch-22 situation. One online article we read said that “the US government has never confirmed that it is a secret facility”. Thing is, if they did…then it wouldn’t be.
So if it is a storage facility, what’s actually stored at Area 51? Well, we don’t know, so let’s do the only sensible and responsible thing in the circumstances…and speculate wildly. As such, we can reveal that Area 51 is used for the storage of alien spaceships and bodies, the golden fleece, and a pride of griffins. We weren’t sure what the right collective term for a group of griffins would be so we’ve opted to bow to the lion part of their cryptozoological genes. We’d like to apologise to any eagles who may have been offended by this.
Even if Area 51 houses nothing more interesting than a couple of planes and a staff canteen, it’s still been responsible for the creation of another, truly exciting, storage facility…
Hangar 51 from the Indiana Jones movies
A Nevada secret storage facility with 51 in the title…where could George Lucas have come up with such an idea? However he managed this incredible creative leap, who can forget that scene at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark in which the Ark of the Covenant is crated up and stored away there? A glorious moment in the history of both film and storage facilities. Sadly, Hangar 51 did go on to have its memory tarnished by also cropping up in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
The Smithsonian Institution
Getting back onto slightly less fictional (i.e. real) territory, the Smithsonian Institution forms the largest group of museums in the world. Until 1967, it was officially known as the United States National Museum and is estimated to hold around 137 million different items. The fact that it is made up of such diverse collections has led to it being known in America by the nickname of “the nation’s attic”. So at least if the world’s economic problems continue, recording one special episode of Cash in the Attic there should be able to clear things up.
Each year 32 million visitors take advantage of the Institution’s free entry to see some of the wonders that are on show. The eclectic exhibits on display throughout their museums include the Hope Diamond, the Apollo 11 command module, and Tony Hawk’s first skateboard. Something for everyone!
The storage facility from Ghostbusters
Is it a storage facility or is it a ghost prison? For the purposes of this article, we’re going with the Ghostbusters’ own definition of it as the former. In the first Ghostbusters movie, over-officious council employee Walter Peck makes the biggest mistake of his career in municipal administration by ordering it to be shut down. The resulting phantom-filled explosion tears a hole in the roof of the building and fills the surrounding area with malevolent spectral beings. It’s just another day in the life of ordinary storage-folk.
The place from Storage 24
What’s Storage 24 you ask? And it’s that response which shows why it became the lowest-grossing movie at the US box office in 2013. The British-made flick was written, directed by and starred ex-Doctor Who actor Noel Clarke. Incredibly, despite being set in the impossibly glamorous environs of a British storage facility, the film flopped in the States. To be fair to Noel, we should point out that it did do slightly better in the UK and some other parts of the world. Not only is the film set in a storage facility, it was also inspired by a visit to one. Following that visit, Clarke said he initially thought –
“Wouldn’t it be crazy if there was a serial killer that was killing people in one of these places?”
But then…
“One day I woke up and I was like, ‘Don’t be ridiculous. A serial killer is ridiculous. An alien would be better.’”
We simply don’t have any comments that can top that.
