Cardiff, or “the ‘Diff”, is the capital of Wales and one of the most popular tourist destinations in the United Kingdom. It is a charming city by the sea that has many things going for it (other than just being the home of Doctor Who). Keep reading to find out why Cardiff is such a great place to live and why you should consider moving there.
The rugby
If you’re into rugby, Cardiff is the place to be. The city is home to the impressive Millenium Stadium, the national stadium of Wales and the home of the Welsh national rugby union team, which hosts rugby and football matches, live music and other major events. But Cardiff is not only about rugby, the city is very committed to sports in general and is in fact the European Capital of Sports for 2014.
Amazing shopping
Cardiff is also a major UK shopping destination, with its funky Victorian and Edwardian arcades and pedestrian friendly shopping streets. There are loads of independent small shops and chic boutiques to choose from. In case you’ve had enough retail therapy in the city centre you can always move on to recently built St. David’s shopping centre – one of the largest shopping complexes in the UK. Top tip: go shopping when there’s a rugby game on – you’ll have all the space you need.
Cardiff Bay
On a sunny summer day you might mistake Cardiff waterfront for somewhere in the Mediterranean. Mermaid Quay with its trendy restaurants, cool bars and stylish shops is where the locals come to relax during the day and long into the night. The playground on the barrage and the carousel will keep the kids happy too. Not to mention the selection of fun boat trips to choose from, popular with stag and hen parties. Sounds nice, doesn’t it?
The location
Cardiff is easy to reach by road and rail, and there’s also an airport. In the north you have the beautiful Brecon Beacons National Park that is perfect for gorge-walking, cycling, mountain biking, canoeing, fishing, caving, rock-climbing, and you name it. Give the Taff Trail a go if you’re into cycling. In the south on the other hand you have the sea with the happening Cardiff waterfront and in the west you have Gower peninsula with its stunning beaches.
Quality of life
You won’t find stressed and hurried people here like you do in London, for example. Life in South Wales is very laid back and slow – why rush when you’ve got all the time in the world? Cardiff is a cosmopolitan city, but still small enough to get around without difficulty. You’ve got hip restaurants and shops, a vibrant arts and culture scene, several universities, the sea and breath-taking countryside at your doorstep. ‘Nuff said.
