Why You Should Pack Up and Move to Glasgow

Glasgow is Scotland’s largest city, offering a plethora of activities and opportunities for residents. If all you know about Glasgow is Taggart, then prepare to have your views updated as we bring you the reasons why you should pack up and move there:

It’s a dear green place!

Glasgow is known for its industrial past but did you realise that the city’s name derives from Gaelic and means ‘dear green’ or ‘dear green place’? If you think that this sentiment is no longer relevant to the city then you’re wrong. Glasgow is home to a number of large, attractive parks that are perfect for walking the dog, enjoying a picnic or just generally watching the world go by. Probably the most famous of these is Glasgow Green, the establishment of which dates back to the 15th century.

The Green, in the city’s east end, is also home to a monument to Admiral Nelson which predates Nelson’s Column in London by three decades, as well as to the People’s Palace Museum which tells the story of the city’s population. Glasgow Green was also where, in 1872, a group of young men played their first proper football match, against Callander FC. Callander’s opponents that day went on to become Rangers FC.

If you’re close to the west end of the city then the Botanic Gardens and Kelvingrove Park are both beautiful spots for a stroll.

It has its own breweries!

You’ve enjoyed that walk through Glasgow Green and now you could do with a beer. It’s decision time. Do you want a beer produced in Scotland or are you more in the mood for something German? If only there was a brewery perched on the edge of Glasgow Green, brewing a range of beers to exacting German styles and standards. That would be amazing, wouldn’t it?

Then prepare to have your socks knocked off by West Brewery! Remember to put your socks back on again, obviously. It’ll get cold later on. Anyway, back to the beer. West Brewery is the only brewery in the UK to produce all of its lagers and wheat beers to the Reinheitsgebot, the famous German beer purity law of 1516. As well as producing their own delicious beers, West also serves food and offers brewery tours too.

For those of you thinking, “Hang on, isn’t there another famous brewery in Glasgow with a German link…?”, you’re quite correct. The city’s Wellpark Brewery is the home of Tennent’s Lager, which was first produced there in 1885 after the know-how and technology behind lager had been brought back to Scotland from Germany by Hugh Tennent.

It’s world famous for football!

Glasgow is home to three iconic football stadiums; Hampden Park, Ibrox Stadium and Celtic Park. Football fans across the world will be aware that the latter two are the homes of Rangers and Celtic respectively, but they may not be quite so familiar with the club residing at Hampden.

Queen’s Park (not to be confused with London side Queen’s Park Rangers) are actually one of Scotland and the UK’s oldest football clubs, having been founded in 1867. The club’s motto is “To play for the sake of playing”…which is reflected in their status as the only amateur side in the Scottish Professional Football League. The Spiders, as they are nicknamed, even reached two English FA Cup Finals in the 1880s, before Scottish clubs were banned from entering.

We should also give a mention to the 4th remaining Glasgow club (Clyde FC moved from Glasgow in the 1990s), Partick Thistle. To save you from much confused wandering around the Partick area in search of their Firhill Stadium, it’s actually located in nearby Maryhill!

Not a football fan? Not a problem!

We haven’t mentioned yet that the city (well, neighbouring Paisley does lay some claim to them too…) is home to the Braehead Clan ice hockey team who play in the UK’s Elite Ice Hockey League. The Clan’s Purple Army of fans numbers two to three thousand at each home game and they make for a great (and friendly) atmosphere. The Clan play at the Braehead Arena which, handily, can be accessed through Braehead Shopping Centre, offering plenty of opportunities for a bite to eat before the game.

It was the city of culture…and it still is!

Many Glasgow residents still look back fondly on the city’s time as European City of Culture in 1990, but the truth is that there are still a multitude of cultural experiences on offer. The city centre alone boasts the Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, The King’s Theatre and arthouse cinema, The Glasgow Film Theatre. Hop on the subway to the west end and you can enjoy a stroll along trendy Byres Road, before catching a lunchtime play at Oran Mor, the former church that is now a popular bar, restaurant and theatre space. Their Play, a Pie and a Pint delivers exactly what it says, from Monday to Saturday.

It’s a great place to eat out!

Though the pies (and the quiches too) at Oran Mor’s lunchtime plays are to be recommended, Scotland’s largest city offers a far wider range of dining experiences. Just to skim the surface of the culinary delights available…

  • Balbir’s is one of the best Indian restaurants in the whole of the UK. Don’t believe us? Visit.
