Storage Takes Over Your TV!

Storage – Every TV exec’s dream

Every television executive has the same dream. To be responsible for a show that manages to combine huge ratings figures with critical acclaim and a barrow-load (or a storage vault-load) of awards. How to make it happen though? Well, traditionally, they’d tread the same path as their predecessors did, experimenting with a mixture of detective shows, sitcoms, hard-hitting documentaries and so on. We’re living in a special time though. We’re living in the moment when the TV execs woke up. When they unplugged themselves from the matrix. When a new enlightenment came. The moment when one of them thought… “How about we make a show involving storage?”

When you combine the key elements of action, glamour, and devastating wit, it’s hard to believe that it took them so long to hit on the idea. Still, let’s not focus on the missed opportunities of the past. Instead, let’s focus on this brave new age in which storage is making it to our screens. Ladies and gentlemen, we bring you…the storage shows you must not miss!

Storage Wars on The History Channel

OK, so it does seem slightly strange that a show heralding a glorious storage-based future should be on The History Channel, but that’s by the by. The main thing is that you can catch this piece of American storage action on TV in the UK. Actually, we should probably mention that the programme name is usually styled as $torage Wars, a path we won’t be going down.

The premise of the show is that abandoned storage units are auctioned off to the highest bidder… the catch being that the bidder doesn’t actually know what’s inside the unit. Potential buyers (usually traders in second-hand items) compete against each other, trying to turn their speculation into accumulation. It all feels a little bit like Deal or No Deal, except without the presence of Noel Edmonds following a director’s instructions to “Try to look even more earnest. Maybe 10% more earnest?”

In fact, the show has proved so popular that it has now spawned several spin-offs. Storage Wars: Texas, Storage Wars: New York, and Storage Wars: Canada have all hit the small screen since the original show’s 2010 debut. Effectively, storage is the new CSI.

Sorry, we were being silly there. We meant that CSI is the old storage.

Storage Hunters on Dave

The premise of this show is – well, it’s pretty much the same as the premise that we just described for Storage Wars. It would seem that US TV execs don’t quite have the imagination of their UK counterparts, otherwise they would of course have commissioned an entirely original show idea, like… Storage Wars on Ice. Dave (the channel)’s description of the show says that it involves “heated arguments, punch-ups and, just sometimes, a boot-full of booty.” Storage Hunters basically fills that awkward middle ground between Bargain Hunt and Crimewatch.

Auction Hunters on Discovery

You think that we’re going to tell you that Auction Hunters is a show in which opposing sides compete to try to make a profit out of auctioned storage units, don’t you? Well you’re wrong! Thankfully. Even we’re not sure that we could take that same format appearing under a third title. This one follows two storage auction hunters, Allen Haff and Clinton ‘Ton’ Jones. Doesn’t sound that interesting to you? Let us take you through some of the items their adventures have led them to…

  • A fighting chair. To be honest, we’ll admit to being momentarily disappointed when Google informed us that this is a swivelling chair which an angler on a boat can be harnessed to when dealing with a particularly strong catch. It’s not the fully martial arts trained robo-chair that we had initially envisaged. On the plus side though…it is like something from Jaws!
  • A mixed martial arts octagonal fighting cage. After the disappointment of the fighting chair, we googled this one to make sure. It’s as it sounds. It has nothing to do with angling. Unless Robson Green’s Extreme Fishing is a lot more extreme than we thought.
  • A pair of racing lawnmowers. What? This has to be another piece of weirdly named fishing equipment, right? Wrong. Apparently, racing modified ride-on lawnmowers is a real thing. Not just a real thing in America either, there’s a British Lawn Mower Racing Association and their events have been entered by the likes of Murray Walker, Phil Tufnell, and Chris Evans!
  • A medieval catapult for storming castles. What’s most bewildering about this is that at some point somebody must have taken the decision to transport it to America. What kind of baggage allowance did they have?

Have we convinced you that storage is a wonderful world?

Hopefully having read all of this you’re coming around to our way of thinking regarding the all-action thrill-ride that is the world of storage. How can you be a part of it? How can you feel like you’re stepping into the screen? How can you unleash your storage side? Well, you could always try putting something into storage.

Joking aside (we’re going to put our hands up and admit that we may have exaggerated by approximately 7% about the whole ‘thrill-ride’ thing), our friendly and professional team can cater to all of your storage needs. Whether you’re moving house and need to de-clutter, you have a collection that requires extra space, or you’re reorganising your business premises…we can help.
