Flexistore’s Top Moving Tips

Moving house can be a stressful experience at the best of times. There are some simple ways to stop yourself becoming lost in boxes or cornered by old possessions as well as keeping the important things nearby and out of harm’s way though. Here are some straightforward tips to make sure things run as smoothly and easily as possible.

Write a list

Don’t start packing randomly! Before you start anything, list what is going in each box with a number assigned to the box. Write the number on the box and you’ll know where everything is. This will save hours of rummaging further down the line and keep everything where it needs to be to avoid an organisational catastrophe. You’ll never have to spend hours searching for that one piece of furniture again. While doing this make sure you don’t put too much in a single box, as remember you’ll still need to carry it!

Also keep in mind that things may move when travelling, so keep hazardous materials like paint, bleach or aerosols in a separate box from anything important, this is especially imperative if you have kids. The same is true for fragile items; you should also plan in advance how you’re going to keep them safe whether that is by using bubble wrap, newspaper or other materials.

Colour Coordinate

Give each room a colour, e.g. blue for the bathroom or white for the kitchen. Put a sticker or use a coloured marker pen to mark the colour on the box based on its destination and then add a matching sign to the room’s door in your new home. Match the colours to easily keep everything going to the right place and stop a confused piece of cutlery ending up in the bathtub.

This can also be used to entertain kids who can get bored easily or frustrated with the slow moving process, so get them to match the colours to the rooms so they can feel they are more involved. Or you could even consider making the kids some smaller boxes to keep them interested and let them be helpful at the same time.

Keep a hold of any important papers

Don’t let anything really important get lost in your possessions. Keep important documents like birth certificates, bank records, bills, closing papers, realtor info or pretty much anything you wouldn’t want a stranger to get his or her hands on with you all the way through the move. This will stop any frantic searching for necessary documents later on.

Assign Personal Boxes

Give each person a small box that will stand out to fill with things they’ll want or need right away such as sheets, towels, pens and paper, cosmetics etc. This is also a great idea for kids so they can keep the toys they want close at hand and not have to hunt through huge amounts of heavy boxes to find their favourite toy.

Hire a Self Storage Unit

When you’re moving you may find out there’s not as much space as you thought or there are things you don’t need any more but you don’t want to deal with right now. That’s where a self storage container comes in. Keep your property secure, clean and out of your way for a low price and give yourself one less thing to stress about.
